Review of 2014 - Young Mama Power!

Posted by Prymface on Wednesday, December 31, 2014,

With only hours to go till 2015 I thought I should write a quick recap of the year. It has the feel good factor of writing a to-do list of things you've already actually done so you get the instant satisfaction of ticking them all off straight away. If I'd written a to-do list at the beginning of this year though I wouldn't have had a clue where to start. The great thing about this year is that it's been full of surprises and it really feels like a UK community of young mums are coming togeth...

The Real Battle of Ideas

Posted by Prymface on Sunday, January 23, 2011,

In October I was aware that somewhere in London there was a battle taking place - not a physical battle but a battle of ideas - it sounded intense.  One battle was about ‘why policy is obsessed with teenage parenthood’ - The speakers were people I had heard of; I’d read their books and articles, and I was often delighted by their ability to challenge the common negative perceptions of teenage parents. I wondered how they would fight their corner - what prejudices they would expose. I ha...

The girl who couldn't say no

Posted by Prymface on Wednesday, December 1, 2010,

Occasionally you put words into a search box and there listed in front of you is exactly what you always needed. Years of randomly googling 'teenage pregnancy', not really sure of what it was I was looking for, one day resulted in the discovery of the answer: Tracy Engelbrecht

Tracy got pregnant at 14 (nearly 15!). She is smart, articulate, funny, humble, honest, proud, assertive, passionate, good-at-putting-systems-in-place and gorgeous! She tells her story without sounding like she belongs o...

Kids having Kids

Posted by Prymface on Friday, October 22, 2010,
I've been doing some research about 'the cost of teenage parenthood' for an evaluation at work (I bet they're so glad they  asked me to do this!). Depending on which report you read 'costs' vary from about £1,000 to £197,000 per teenage parent! That seems like a pretty big margin indicating that perhaps people aren't really sure what they're measuring!

Delve deeper into reports and outcomes (such as income, qualifications etc) for 'teenage parents' will often be compared to those who have ch...

Preventing Teenage Pregnancy or simply preventing agency

Posted by prymface on Saturday, May 8, 2010,
I know it's all been said before here and here and I've blogged about it recently but it seems some people still believe that in order to prevent pregnancies they need to reinforce the message that all teenage pregnancies are 'bad' and 'shameful' and will basically ruin your life, rather than allow young people to talk about why they may want a baby, or why they feel like they don't have the same choices as other girls, or why they don't care enough about themselves to think about the next da...

In their words

Seems like I'm not the only one with a bee in my bonnet about the stereotype of young mums. Read these fantastic posts from those who are living it/have lived it...

Letter to my pregnant self

Posted by Prymface on Thursday, February 18, 2010,
So anyway, I've been asked to write a letter to my pregnant self for a book. I think its a fab idea. In fact I had done something similar in my 13&30 blog. I'm just a bit concerned though because this letter will have my name attached to it. I'm not used to justifying myself in public. Because it's actually really hard. Whatever you say you know what people are really thinking. Unless you were a young parent yourself you can't really understand. So I asked my mum what I should put...

Life plans: before and after

Posted by Prymface on Sunday, February 14, 2010,
Here are two blog posts about life plans. Both became pregnant at teenagers. This wasn't in either of their original life plans. Yet both were able to build on their own strength and determination to recreate even better life plans for themselves and their children. Be inspired!
